Willy Wagtail Mini Quilt pattern

Hi. Welcome to Sewbluethread.  Thank you for stopping by.

With the festivities behind us, it’s good to start the year off with something new and fresh.

I’ve been taking a break from quilting over the holiday season, and am ready to begin again.  It’s time to release another quilt pattern.  This has no relevance to last years nautical/harbour-side and even ocean themes that were released.

I’m happy to finally show you the finished ‘Willy Wagtail’ mini quilt.

Originally, this pattern started out as a scribbly doodle on a page.  Where it all started, was this time last year, I was waiting for  my husband in the carpark at the airport, and just at that time, a pretty little Willy Wagtail flew by and sat on the fence near the car.  I knew the name of this bird because it was wagging it’s tail and had seen them around.

Immediately, got out a handy notebook and pen and start the outline drawing for a quilt pattern.  It just looked right on paper at the time.  Anyway, since then, and with a bit of readjustment, and writing up instructions, I finally, finished the pattern.

The fabric used here is called Thicket by Gingiber, for Moda.   The fabric chosen, was just what was needed.  No colours, just black and white fabric with textured patterns.  The binding fabric used was called ‘Menagerie collage’ by Michael Miller fabrics.

Here is how the 2 1/2″  sashing was placed.

I used a damask table napkin, which is absolutely beautiful to sew.

The back of the block.

Made sure there was some way to hang the mini quilt, so added a 10″ fabric square (folded in half) onto each of the 2 top corners.

or one of my other patterns, ‘Ribbon Treat‘, ‘Rolling Waves‘ table topper, or ‘celebrate‘ quilt table runners.  These also have easy to follow instructions with pictures so you can’t go wrong.

So until next time.

Happy Sewing!
